HP Pailion DV4 comes in two colors, Onyx and Bronze, and I personally think both look as good as the other. I did however want to see what others thought and did a little unscientific survey. I asked some friends of mine (23 people to be exact 11 gals 12 guys). I asked which they preferred. 17 said the Onyx. Every single guy liked the Onyx and 6 of the women preferred the Bronze. sides the monitors outer colors being different, the inside and trim are different as well, on the bronze dv4z the trim and inside of the system are also bronze but on the Onyx system the inside and trim is a metallic with a tiny checkered pattern.

Which colors you like? Onyx or Bronze?

I’ve been looking for a new notebook recently as my old one needed replacement and I wanted to step up to something just a tad bit faster. As I use a notebook on a daily basis, either on the road or at my desk, it needs to be as well-rounded as possible. For starters I want a full size keyboard, built in DVDRW drive to not cut into my productivity much as I have to scramble to go find the external optical drive many smaller notebooks are featured with. Furthermore wide-screen TFT’s with >1280 x 1024 resolution makes for the fonts and icons to be rather small on a 14″ or 15″ screen hence I’ll settle for the defacto 1024×768 resolution with a screen size of 14″ or larger. What else? Well, I can’t be bothered with all sort of extra multimedia keys placed in odd locations, chrome or matte silver lining, fancy lights or anything else that’s just there to up the notebook’s visual appeal and not its functionality. So basically I’m looking for a notebook that clearly puts function over form and not vice-versa.

What I did find distracting at times was the fan noise, because even when used in battery mode, with the processor running at a mere 366MHz, it would spin up audibly. My previous notebooks have all had fans that were inaudible or wouldn’t even turn on when running on batteries, but I do have a fairly quiet office, hence your mileage may vary. Battery life is on average 3.5-hours of normal use, which is right in line with similar Centrino notebooks. Unfortunately a spare battery is sold at the usual ridiculous aftermarkt price, else I’d opt for a 2nd NC6120 battery as a backup when I’m traveling. One thing got me a bit puzzled though, the HP nc6120 features a docking station connector at the bottom which has its contacts unprotected by a plastic lid, hence beware that no paperclips or other metal objects are under the notebook when you put it down, as who knows what might happen. I would’ve welcomed a rubber gasket or some plastic lid to protect the connector from such mishaps.

I travel a lot and manage a production facility. In order to travel light I am using a hp mini 1000 laptop. In my office just like most of small laptop users I have a 19" monitor. Recently we installed surveillance cameras to our production and I needed a second display to be connected to my laptop. USB Multi Display Adapter is the point where you get stuck with small laptops: They have many USB ports, but no expansion slot for a secondary monitor. It charges up for a little bit (to 15%) and then stops for no reason. I'm using XP, and the battery icon in the task tray says "plugged in, not charging." I don't know if XP has anything to do with this, but my previous battery certainly did not have this kind of problem.I tried taking the battery out of my laptop to let it rest, and then put it back to charge it again, hoping my laptop will finally get used to it and charge it all up to 100%, but it stopped at 20%, 40%, 50%, 80%, 90%.

Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario 2100

After I wrote the review on my HP Pavilion, I spent a lot of time with my sisters laptop, a Compaq Presario 2100. I was setting up a wireless router at my parents house and I was configuring her laptop to connect to it. I was having some issues (not related to the laptop but the wireless card) so I got to kick the tires on her laptop, comparing it to mine. I tried to not let sibling rivalry come into my judgements. As you may know, HP and Compaq merged businesses and now HP has sort of taken over the production of most the companies PC products (or is it the other way around? I dunno, I get it confused). Even though the Compaq Presario 2100 bears the Compaq name it is extremely similar to the HP Pavilion laptops. Features and support are very similar. Both products are good choices but I favor my HP Pavilion for various reasons that I’ll include in this review.

The Compaq Presario line is a little different from the Pavilion line in that the system can either be purchased off the shelf, preconfigured, or use get a more customized machine according to your needs. The laptop that I’m reviewing has the following basic setup (it is very similar to my HP Pavilion ze4430):

AMD Athlon XP-M 1800+

512 MB of PC2700 RAM

40 GB HDD

15" XGA TFT screen powered by an ATI video chip.

It is possible to have a built-in wireless adapter installed but this laptop did not have that configuration. It also came with a DVD/CR-RW drive which is almost the standard now with laptops. Who needs one of those portable DVD players when they have a laptop? It also had a 3.5" floppy drive, for what that’s worth. It has 2 USB ports (ver 1.1) but no firewire port. The other legacy ports are there, including an S-video out connector.

The screen seems to be extremely similar to my HP, it is a 15" screen with a resolution of 1024x768. It is driven by the same ATI Radeon Mobile IGP 320M. It doesn’t have it’s own dedicated memory, it shares up to 64 MB with the main memory, effectively reducing the total main memory to 448 MB. I know that some people would rather have dedicated video memory in addition to system memory but unless you will be doing a lot of graphic intensive applications (video editing, FPS games) you really won’t notice a big difference. The colors are crisp and clean. The angle that you can look at the screen without any distortion is pretty deep, which can be a good thing if you’re sharing the screen with a friend to watch a DVD but is bad if the guy sitting next to you in the airport just snuck a peek at your company’s classified documents. DVD playback is great as well.

The sound leaves a little bit to be desired. Unlike the HP and its Altec Lansing speakers, the Compaq Presario 2100 has a sound that is adequate but definetly isn’t high fidelity. CD playback (and MP3's) sound average at best. It isn’t horrible but it could be a lot better.

The keyboard and mouse (touchpad) are similar to the HP. While I raved on how much I loved the Synaptics touchpad installed on my HP, the one installed on the Compaq Presario 2100 is different, in a bad way. The buttons are positioned in a different area with respect to the touch pad and they feel like they are positioned too far away. The actual touchpad (and scroll wheel area) feel comfortable, but I would still rather have the buttons closer to the touchpad. The keys feel a little stickier than the HP keys but they are quiet and comfortable.

The software package includes Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works (with MS Money), Roxio Easy CD creator and a host of other applications that make the laptop self reliant. All the basic apps are included. More software jacks up the price so the software may seem sparse but it keeps the price down which is always a good thing.

Battery life is a little better for the Compaq Presario 2100 compared to the HP. The battery is a Lithium Ion battery from Sanyo. A full charge will last over three hours. Since there isn’t a built-in wireless adapter to drain the battery it lasts a lot longer. An empty battery charges quickly as well. Power management can be configured to your needs. The laptop does get warm after a while but that happens with the majority of the laptops.

With regards to size, it’s size is on par with the HP Pavilion. Its dimensions are 13" x 10.7" x 1.6" and weighs in at 7.2 pounds. This is a pretty much the same size as the HP, putting it in the “average” size category. Its construction doesn’t feel as sturdy as the HP. I didn’t like the molded accents on the top of the laptop and when it’s closed it feels a little flimsy. Hopefully that doesn’t mean it will fall apart. Its overall styling just isn’t what I personally like. I like sharp corners and symmetry but it has lots of curves and accents. Not my cup of tea, but maybe it’s yours.

Overall, I would recommend the Compaq Presario 2100 if the price is right. It is a decent laptop with decent features but it isn’t one that I would whole-heartedly recommend. It does everything you would expect from a Compaq (HP) built computer but there are better laptops out there. I give it a solid 4.5 stars.

In conformity with an industry-standard benchmark test, the new HP EliteBook 6930p can be configured to be used with an optional ultra-capacity battery to deliver up to 24 hours of battery runtime.
"The launch of the new 6930 series from HP finally addresses the battery life issue on business notebooks, enabling users to work for long periods without the need of regular battery recharges and exchanges," Etienne Borg Cardona, managing director of FGL Information Technology Limited, a subsidiary of the Forestals Group, said.

After scouring the laptop market for several months and having a run-in with a dreadful sales agent at Dell, I decided to go to PC World and just play with everything they had.
Loads of options, IBM, Toshiba and of course Compaq.The R4000 is a pretty beast and caught my eye immediately. It is designed for people who want the sheer power of a desktop PC with portability.
We flitted around the store (my wife and I) changing the wallpapers on all the laptops to check out the quality of the screen. Also we opened Internet Explorer on each machine to see how quickly it would open. The R4000 won on both counts.
The spec being: AMD Athlon 64 3200+  1.0 GB DDR SDRAM  15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)  128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory  80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive  DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support  54g Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN with 125HSM/SpeedBooster  12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (Compaq HSTNN-DB02)
The laptop is very well packaged. All the accessories, discs etc were placed in a separate smaller box with the laptop. The R4000 looks fabulous and is amazingly rugged - I found some of its competitors to feel flimsy in comparison.
It is coloured black with a silver Compaq logo. The inside is somewhat different and it is nearly totally silver. It is very eye-catching.The dimensions 14.25" (W) x 10.96" (L w/out hinge) to 11.18" (L w/hinge) x 1.8" (H Front) to 1.88"(H Rear) and it weighs in at about 7.9 lbs.
It is wireless enabled so it 'found' my new router with ease and set-up was a breeze.I use it all over the house and garden. Works superbly and the seemingly high weight is not a problem or hindrance at all.
Batteries last around 150 minutes. And that is with Internet connected and DVD running!The R4000 is well cooled and ventilated. It does not seem to run as hot as my old Toshiba.
The 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800) is superb. No complaints at all. Watching DVD's is a joy - much better than the DVD player plugged into my TV!The speakers and very good and very clear. Plenty of available volume.
I love the volume control. Three hotkey buttons for up, down and mute. These are SO useful.The DVD burner was an unexpected bonus. I have not used it to burn DVD's yet so cannot comment.

If you're looking for a bargain basement system to ease the back-to-school burden but don't want to sacrifice multimedia features, then the Compaq Presario R3000 could be the notebook for you.
The 8-pound R3000 has a sharp 15.4-inch WXGA display. The system had no problem displaying our test DVD movie clearly, and its JBL Pro speakers delivered superb sound quality. The nVidia GeForce4 420 Go graphics solution helped the R3000 win first place on our 3D performance tests. (Although our test system came with 802.11b, HP is offering free upgrades to 802.11g.)
On Multimedia Content Creation Winstone and our Serious Sam SE gaming demo, the R3000 had the best scores of the budget machines with 16.6 and 28.4, respectively. But we were surprised to find no memory card reader on a system with such multimedia-centric components. On Battery Mark, the R3000 lasted 4 hours 42 minutes, which was lowest among the budget systems.
The R3000 offers very good bang for the buck if you're on a budget but still want a spiffy multimedia system that will impress your dormmates. (Hey, you even get Microsoft Office SE 2003 for when it's time to get to work.) Shy away from the R3000, however, if you're looking for a more mobile system to carry around campus.

Pros: I love this laptop compared to all my other friends and collegues laptops. I like that its 14.1" screen size...not too small and not too large and cumbersome. It is also very thin, but it is extremly sturdy, even though sometimes I think I might be holding it in one hand too much. It is light compared to all my friend's laptops. I am a graduate student, and it portays a business minded image. I have had no stability issues. It has performed flawlessly for me thus far. I am currently upgrading the RAM from 512MB to 1.5GB. I do not have any issues with the 512 for my usage, I am just greedy I guess. FEATURES I LIKE: -Ambient Light Sensor: which automatically adjust the brightness of the screen acording to ambient lighting present -Built in SD card reader -Both pointing stick and touchpad -one touch presentation button -onboard mic -Security lock feature which can also be set to lock your hard drive permanently in case you have highly sensitive data on your hard drive. Overall, I am in love with this laptop. I hope it give me many more years of trouble free service.
Cons: no on-screen display of volume meter, can not get my bluetooth to work ( I do not have much use for it though)

Pros: This is an excellent business notebook that has a great keyboard, good performance, and simple design. I have yet to find any features that irritate me enough to return the notebook, and I have been through at least 4 notebooks looking for the right fit. The NC6200 series is a great alternative for anyone looking to buy a business notebook with a ThinkPad design. It is my opinion that this notebook has a better build that the ThinkPad T43. Cons: Battery(HP COMPAQ PB994A) performance is ok, but for a business notebook battery performance should be more of a focus. Lack of an intergrated fingerprint reader and built in microphone. Additionally, the edges of the notebook should be smoother, especially around the palm rest.

Build QualityThe D610 is a solid looking notebook -- noticeably thicker and burlier than my old Presario 1710TW, and from what I've read thicker and more durable than the Latitude D600 that it replaced in Dell's business notebook line-up. There is really not any flex when you pick the machine up by a corner, and the screen hinges are solid -- the screen doesn't wobble when you gently shake the notebook back and forth. The bezel surrounding the screen seems to be separated slightly near the bottom (just above the Dell logo -- see picture of keyboard below), although I didn't notice this until after I read about it in online forums. A dust-cover for the ports in back and for the docking port underneath would have been nice. Overall I give the D610 high marks for build quality.

The first thing you'll need to go along with your D80 is a lens. If you got the lens kit then you're ready to go. If not, you can use most Nikon F-mount lenses with the D80 without issue. Do keep in mind that there's a 1.5X focal length conversion, so a 50 mm lens has the field-of-view of a 75 mm lens.
As for the kit lens itself, it's just fair. While it covers a very nice range, it's not terribly sharp, especially around the edges of the frame. If there's one thing I've learned about lenses it's that you (usually) get what you pay for.
Something else you'll need to pick up is a memory card. Unlike the D70's before it, the new D80 uses Secure Digital (as well as high capacity SDHC cards), and I'd suggest a 1GB card as a good starter size. Buying a "high speed" card is absolutely a good idea.
The D80 uses the same powerful EN-EL3e battery as the D200. This battery packs 11.1 Wh of energy, which is about as good as it gets. Since Nikon doesn't supply battery life numbers that use the CIPA standard, I can't tell you how it compares to other D-SLRs. I can tell you that Nikon gives battery life numbers of 600 and 2700 shots (obviously with very different conditions), and I'm guessing that the CIPA number lies closer to the bottom of that range.
When it's time to charge the battery just snap it into the included charger. It takes a little over two hours to fully charge the battery. This isn't one of those handy chargers that plugs right into the wall -- you must use a power cable.

iPod Battery Life?

We all know that the iPod battery life isn’t the greatest but it is good enough that I don’t think it is a major issue.

My Current battery stats:
Usage - 5 Hours, 49 Minutes
Standby - 2 Days, 2 Hours

with about 25% left

I actually think that is quite good. Probably better than what I have seen previously with my iPod. I used it for a lot of texts, some browsing, some calls, some music. Not bad since I haven’t plugged it in for over two days now.
There are many ways to save your battery life as well. One major way is to turn down the screen brightness. Another way is to turn of the ‘Ask to Join Networks’ in Wifi settings. Of course using Wifi, Bluetooth, watching youtube etc, will all drain your battery faster.
There was a rumor going around that turbosim, stealth sim, etc. caused your battery to drain faster. Since I have had first hand experience with it, I would say that it does make a difference without it. I was getting less usage and standby time before when I did have the turbosim in.

The averages were:
Usage - 3 to 4 hrs
Standby - 1.5 days

Obviously I am doing better than that now.

One more tip: I’ve noticed that the battery tends to last a little longer when I leave it plugged in beyond when it appears to be full on the screen. I usually leave it plugged in overnight and get more usage and standby than when I charge it for a couple hours during the day even though it does look fully charged.
Overall I think the iPod battery is sufficient. It is not unreasonable to have to charge your phone once every 2 days. What are the stats on your battery life? Leave a comment and let me know.

I find so many tohsiba laptop battery users have this problem : the battery fully discharged. now i list some user's troubles

User A : I bring to you guys a strange problem I've got on my Toshiba laptop since one week ago. Basically battery isn't charging anymore. When I put it back on the laptop the charging lamp comes on for 2 seconds and then comes off. There's no charge at the battery, if I take main off computer dies immediately. But Windows XP ALWAYS acuses 46% of charge on the battery, and says not charging as well. My battery didn't get end of life because I rarely use it and keep it off the laptop and was holding full charge, not used more than 50 cycles. Facts: 1) I know the battery was full discharged from last time I used, about 3 days ago problem appeared. 2) I got some virus/spywares days ago, do you think it maybe afected Bios?

User B: I had a similar problem when my battery got fully discharged. I ended up buying a seperate charger and then had the same prob, it would positively charge for short 2-5 second intervals.This worked for me: allow the 2 second charge, remove power adopter cord, re-insert again and again. The battery will slowly charge and after 20 times the power supply board will acknowledge that there is indeed a battery and charge fully. Don't let the battery full discharge after this point however.

I purchased this Toshiba Satellite A70 one year later it still works just as great as the day I bought it. It has the powerful P4 chip and a kick-ass ATI chipset and GPU. Many people complain about a heating problem, but the unit has two fans (one for the CPU and one for the GPU) and, if kept clean, cool the laptop sufficiently. At the time it was a relatively powerful system.The screen is purely eye-candy. I love it. It has a resolution of 1280x800, which is a 16:10 ratio, and is more crisp and clear than any other laptop i've ever seen. very bright, very clean, and not the least bit fuzzy.This laptop is a big one. Originally classed as a desktop replacement, it weighs in at an arm-popping 9 pounds (with the 12-cell battery). However, this laptop is built solid and very durable. In the time of my ownership, it has endured water, soda, a drop on the concrete, and a tumble down the isle on a bus, not to mention hundreds of drops on the floor (one with the DVD drive wide open). This is one tough system. I have actually half taken it apart while it was running, including the screen. (Don't try this, I'm an expert)As for software, I cannot say whether or not it came with good software. I'm a tweaker, so the day I got it, I wiped it and reinstalled windows, along with a version of linux. It's sad to say, this laptop is very tricky to run linux on. It was designed for windows. The laptop comes with a recovery DVD that restores the system to the way it was when you first took it out of the box. I suppose that would be a good thing for the average user.This laptop used to make an excellent gaming computer. It could handle any game older than it, and a few games that are younger. Not an authoritative answer but I recently read that lithium and NiMHs will both lose charge over time. According to a laptop battery site, these batteries keep a charge for two to three months, slowly losing their charge however.

I found the site and include the info here. Keep in mind that this applies to the much larger, notebook batteries but the advice seems good (except for the uncertain remark. You'd think they'd know by now).

Batteries may be damaged if stored for prolonged periods with a closed circuit. The environmental temperature also affects the storage life of any battery. Cool environments are best, and are assumed for the above estimates. All storage times are based on storage starting with the battery fully charged.

For example, schools that may not use their laptop computers during the summer should fully charge the batteries, remove them from the computers, and store them in a cool location for the duration of the summer.

You can't mistake the Inspiron 1100's lineage: it sports the same "Venice blue and moonlight silver" case as all new Inspirons, including the 600m and the 8600. In fact, the Inspiron 1100 shares its case design with the more expensive Inspiron 5100, which carries more cutting-edge components than the 1100.
With a 14.1-inch screen, the Inspiron 1100's case measures 12.9 by 10.8 by 1.7 inches and weighs 7.4 pounds, average for a mainstream notebook. There's also an optional 15-inch display that jacks up size and weight slightly. You won't want to travel a lot with either one, but taking them on occasional jaunts won't do you in, either. Large cases such as this often house two internal secondary storage drives, such as a floppy and a CD-RW. But the Inspiron 1100 offers just one fixed (that is, not swappable) secondary drive; you'll have to choose from CD, DVD, CD-RW, and DVD/CD-RW drives when you order. In the growing trend toward kissing floppies good-bye, Dell offers an external USB floppy drive only. The Inspiron 1100's extra pounds lie in its huge 14.8V, 6600mAh battery. the cell keeps this system running for four hours, despite its power-draining, desktop Celeron processor. But we're not wild about the loud fan that's needed to cool down this hot processor. The Inspiron 1100's ample case allows room for a wide and firm keyboard, a spacious touchpad, and two big mouse buttons. There's also plenty of space for ports and slots, although the budget-minded Inspiron 1100 includes just the bare minimum. A 56K modem port sits on the right edge, and Ethernet, VGA, S-Video-out, and two USB 2.0 ports are spread out across the back edge. The left edge offers headphone and microphone ports, plus one Type II PC Card slot. The front edge features two speakers that a produce more vibrant sound than that of most mainstream notebooks.

Apple PowerBook G4 (12-inch, SuperDrive) Review

No one can argue that the 12-inch Apple PowerBook G4 isn't attractive -- you get a competitive set of hardware, including a roomy, 80GB hard drive, a single-layer DVD burner, and a DVI connection, as well as an absolutely best-in-class software package.

Though we think the 12 inch iBook G4 is the better choice for basic users, we think the 12-inch PowerBook offers a better combination of power, features and battery life for the price than any other Apple laptop. As such, unless you engage in video editing on the fly or have some other essential reason to haul around a 15- or 17-inch display, we recommend the cheaper, more compact 12-inch model to the larger PowerBooks. (Use the money you'll save to buy an LCD monitor to use with your laptop at home or at work.)

DesignThe 12-inch PowerBook G4's rock-solid, aluminium-alloy case is an upscale adaptation of Apple's less expensive polycarbonate iBook G4. The 12-inch PowerBook G4 is smaller than the 12-inch iBook G4, measuring a modest 277mm wide, 218mm deep and 30mm thick. At 2.1kg, it's on the lighter side of the thin-and-light spectrum.

Like the iBook G4, the PowerBook G4 has a comfortable keyboard with rounded keys shaped to fit your fingers; our only gripe is the grossly undersize arrow keypad. The spacious touch pad's two-finger scrolling feature, for scrolling horizontally and vertically, is magical (use it for a few days, and you'll wonder how you ever did without it). The display, which actually measures 12.1-inches, features a standard 1,024x768-pixel native resolution -- not optimal for graphics work but adequate for general use; many 12-inch PowerBook G4 owners use an external display at home or work. We like the laptop's speakers, which hide underneath the central screen hinge yet somehow provide rich, multilayered sound. The 12-inch PowerBook G4 lacks the external multimedia controls found on many other laptops -- that's the price you pay for a streamlined design. A note of caution to those who live in cold climates: the aluminium-alloy wrist rest can feel downright chilly until your typing hands warm it up.

FeaturesAll of the PowerBook G4's ports sit along its left edge. They're largely similar to what you'll find on the 12-inch iBook G4. For networking, the 12-inch PowerBook provides 56Kbps modem and 10/100 Ethernet ports. Also onboard are connections for headphones, audio line-in (which the iBook lacks), power, two USB 2.0 ports, a mini-DVI port that accommodates adaptors for DVI, VGA, S-Video and composite video connections. Our test unit also had a six-pin, 400Mbps FireWire port. The opposite edge hosts the slot-loading single-layer DVD burner, which we prefer to a breakable optical-drive tray.

Like the iBook G4, the PowerBook G4 lacks a true productivity suite, but it ships with a very strong software package. You get the latest version of the terrific Mac OS X, nicknamed Tiger, plus Apple's excellent iLife '05 software bundle for managing photos (iPhoto), videos (iMovie) and music (iTunes). Also included are more professional-grade apps, including Art Directors Toolkit, OmniOutliner and QuickBooks for Mac.

We think it's a bit high for the uneven mix of high-end and low-end specs: a 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 processor, 512MB of slowish 333MHz memory (upgradable to 1.25GB), an Nvidia GeForce FX Go 5200 graphics chip with 64MB of dedicated VRAM, Airport Extreme 802.11g wireless, a spanking-new Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card, and a big 80GB, 5,400rpm hard drive protected by Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor technology, which stops it from spinning when it detects imminent damage.

PerformanceIn our tests, the 12-inch PowerBook G4 excelled with productivity tasks. Using iTunes, it converted a music file into MP3 format in the same fast time as the beefier 15-inch version and surpassed the larger model by more than one minute in our Photoshop CS trials. Despite its small size, the 12-inch PowerBook G4 has the chops for serious graphics work.

Review: Nikon D40

The D40 is Nikon's new entry-level digital SLR. the D40 is one of the lowest priced SLRs on the market. Nikon didn't cut a lot of corners to keep the price down, either -- this is a very capable camera. It has a 6 Megapixel CCD, a large and sharp 2.5" LCD display, full manual controls, an elaborate help system, and the kind of performance that you'd expect from a D-SLR. Did I mention that it's also very compact?

The D40 is sold with a lens (no body only kit yet), and you'll find a brand new second generation 18 - 55 mm lens. Taking the D40's 1.5X focal length conversion into account, the kit lens has the field-of-view of an 27 - 82.5 mm lens. Overall I was pretty happy with this lens, though it has a bit of a problem with purple fringing. I'll have much more on photo quality later in the review.
The D40 doesn't come with a memory card, so you'll need to pick one up if you don't have one already. The camera supports both SD and the newer SDHC cards, which currently top out at a whopping 8GB. I don't think you need a card quite that large -- I'd start out with 1GB myself. Spending a little more for a high speed card is a good idea.
Nikon came up with a new battery when they created the D40, and it's called the EN-EL9. This battery has 7.4 Wh of energy, which is pretty good these days. How does this translate into battery life? Have a look:
The D40 and its new battery turn in above average battery life numbers. I suppose I should mention my usual list of "gotchas" about proprietary batteries like the EN-EL9. First, they're expensive. Secondly, unlike with cameras that use AA batteries, you can't use an off-the-shelf battery when your rechargeable dies. As you can see in the chart above, there's only one camera in this class that uses AAs.
When it's time to charge the battery just snap it into the included charger. It takes just ninety minutes to fully charge the EN-EL9. This isn't one of those handy chargers that plugs right into the wall -- you must use a power cable.

a review of the Asus Eee PC

Good things come in small packages

The Asus Eee PC challenges many conventional assumptions about mobile computing. The daring, diminutive device combines a svelte subnotebook form factor with a unique Linux software platform and a budget-friendly price—factors that could make this unprecedented product a mainstream marvel. Last week, my colleague Jon described the Eee PC as game-changing: a characterization that we will put to the test in this review.

First impressions The most striking characteristic of the Eee PC is its unbelievably small size. At 8.9" x 6.5" x 1.4" and approximately 2.03lb, the Eee delivers serious mobility. When closed, it's approximately the same size as a hardcover book. It's also very easy to tote around while it is open and can be comfortably held in only one hand. The exterior has a glossy, pearl-white finish that picks up fingerprints very easily, but seems a bit more dirt-resistant than the plain white finish of a MacBook. According to Asus, the Eee PC will eventually be available in a range of colors, including pink, green, and black.

The Eee battery is a round module that fits into the back underneath the screen between the two hinges. The battery fits tightly with no wiggling and can be removed by sliding two clasps simultaneously. The hinges for the lid are very big and seem sufficiently sturdy. The screen, which takes up only part of the lid, is flanked by two large speakers and is surrounded by a wide bezel. The 4GB Eee has an embedded 0.3 megapixel video camera which is built into the bezel above the screen.

The Eee has several vents on the bottom and one on the side. A panel on the bottom can be removed to provide access to the Eee's RAM, but opening the panel voids the warranty. Intrepid modders have already successfully replaced the built-in 512MB stick with 1GB.

When running, the Eee generates very little fan noise. After several hours of use, the machine gets very warm but can still be used comfortably on a lap. The Eee has a row of LEDs along the front-right side that indicate battery status, drive access, and wireless connectivity.

Intel's newest Pentium M ultra-low voltage line of chips, packaged with the 'Centrino' integrated wireless
architecture, finally enabled laptop manufacturers to make viable ultra-portable systems based on the Pentium 4 CPU.
The Pentium M's tiny profile and better performance/power usage ratio has brought the world of tiny laptops much
closer to the mainstream.
The VAIO VGN-T140P/L sports a 1.10GHz Pentium M '733' Ultra low voltage processor. Based on a 90nm process, this
chip uses a 400Mhz FSB and like all 90nm process Pentium M chips, comes equipped with 2MB of level 2 cache memory.
The Pentium M is the fastest currently available in Intel's 'ultra low voltage' mobile line and should provide
plenty of grunt for this tiny laptop.
Like other Pentium M processors, the clock speed does not truly indicate the amount of work it can do relative to
traditional desktop processors, so don't let that scare you off. The Pentium M is the reason that Intel decided to
drop the Gigahertz measurements from its processors and switched to a meaningless 'Performance Rating' figure
instead.
The Intel 855GME chipset provides connectivity with the Centrino architecture. The ICH4-M Southbridge handles the
integrated video courtesy of Intel's Extreme Graphics 2 chip, and a fairly standard array of I/O abilities which
we'll detail a bit later. As you would expect, it also supports a good set of power saving abilities which work in
concert with the processor to save precious battery life, typically by dropping processing speed down substantially
when on batteries. More on this later also.
The VAIO notebook ships with 512MB of DDR memory, 64MB of which is shared with the onboard video. The memory can be
expanded up to 1GB in total, though there is only one SODIMM socket. A smallish 4200RPM 40GB hard drive provides
storage. The Intel Extreme Graphics 2 engine provides excellent image quality and DVD playback, along with some
(mostly theoretical) 3D support.
For older 3D games (from a few years ago) it should be adequate, for current games it is extremely poor. This VAIO
is not intended to be a portable gaming machine, so don't even bother trying to use it for that.
The Lithium-Ion battery snaps into the rear of the notebook (model VGP-BPS3), and carries a capacity of 7.4V /
6600mAH. It weighs about 0.66 pounds, and according to Sony figures, will offer a run time of about 4-8.5 hours with
a full charge.

The Successor To The EOS 300D
Perhaps the most exciting news that came out of this year's Photo Marketting Association (PMA) is Canon's
announcement of the eight-megapixel EOS 350D, the successor to the hugely popular 6.3-megapixel EOS 300D. The 350D (available in both black and silver versions)
wouldn't be far off from that price point, but now you would be getting even more bang for the buck. A new
generation 8.0-megapixel CMOS sensor is the obvious improvement in the 350D, as well as Canon�s renowned DIGIC II
image processor. Overall speed has been improved too, including a faster startup time, faster continuous shooting
speed (3 FPS), and improved CompactFlash writing speed. One of the main complaints of the 300D was its built quality
and the new 350D significantly improved in this aspect as well. Compared to the 300D, the 350D is lighter, smaller,
and offers a more robust handling (despite its plastic casing). Other additions include nine new custom functions,
selectable metering and AF mode, color space adjustments, custom parameters (for contrast, sharpness, saturation and
color tone), Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connection, a new battery grip, and many others. Such impressive specs are almost
unimaginable a couple of years back.

Fujitsu's latest convertible Tablet takes full advantage of Intel's new Centrino technology, and it shows.

The new Fujitsu LifeBook T4220 is a travel-friendly, well-rounded convertible Tablet PC that suffers from a few flaws. When it comes to computing horsepower and video quality, the newest addition to the LifeBook line reaps the benefits of Intel's Next-Generation Centrino Processor Technology (codenamed Santa Rosa), but its battery life left us wanting more.

Dressed in a sleek black-and-silver finish, the LifeBook T4220 weighs a manageable 4.3 pounds and is 1.5 inches thick, so you can haul it around without putting too much strain on your back or arms. Beneath the black lid sits a crisp 12.1-inch display with a native resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (an SXGA+ display is also an option). Viewing angles were good all around on this screen, and color representation was superb. If you'll be using this Tablet outdoors, however, you may want to opt for the daylight-readable screen ,as the standard indoor LCD is difficult to read in direct sunlight.

The display is mounted on a bidirectional swivel mechanism, making it easy to twist the screen in either direction and fold it down for use as a Tablet. You flip the lid latch to secure the screen while in Tablet mode. A built-in sensor automatically adjusts the screen image from portrait to landscape mode, depending on the system's orientation.

A recessed stylus holder and a biometric fingerprint reader sit to the left of the screen; the lower bezel holds an LCD indicator panel and five Tablet function buttons, one of which is used to manually rotate image orientation and two of which are user-programmable. The full-sized keyboard is comfortable with well-spaced keys, and the responsive touchpad sports a scroll button and two mouse controls. Although the plastic black-and-white stylus felt kind of chintzy, it got the job done and worked well with the Active Digitizer screen.

Along the front edge of the keyboard deck are headphone and microphone jacks, a 3-in-1 card reader, and a pair of flat-sounding speakers. The left side houses SmartCard and PC Card slots, a USB port, and a Wi-Fi switch, while the right side holds a modular DVD burner. Three USB ports are positioned along the sides of the notebook, as are Ethernet, modem, and VGA ports. Unfortunately, the T4220 lacks a FireWire and S-Video ports. The 120GB hard drive is protected by an anti-shock mounting mechanism and Fujitsu's 3G Shock Sensor, which retracts the drive's read/write head in the event of a sudden bump or accidental drop.

The big news here is Intel's new Centrino architecture and all the features that come along with it, including faster processors, enhanced graphics performance, and 802.11n wireless. Our LifeBook T4220 was equipped with a new 2.2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 processor (with a front-side bus speed of 800 MHz) and 2GB of DDR2 memory. The T4220 turned in a very respectable PCMark05 score of 4,259, which means it will handle most business applications with aplomb.

The LifeBook T4220 is based on the new Mobile Intel 965 Express chipset, which provides enhanced video performance courtesy of Intel's GMA X3100 graphics controller and Clear Video Technology. After firing up our Finding Nemo DVD, we were very impressed with the image quality; the movie looked smooth and clean with no noticeable artifacts, and colors seemed to jump off the screen. With a 3DMark03 score of 1,743, the LifeBook will likely struggle with most high-end 3D games but had no problems with Vista's Aero interface.

It's too bad this system doesn't last longer on a charge, however. The LifeBook T4220 conked out after two hours and five minutes on our DVD drain test, which means you should expect about three hours of runtime. This showing was a bit surprising, especially given that Intel's new Dynamic FSB Switching technology is supposed to reduce power consumption and improve battery life by decreasing bus speeds and processor voltage when not needed (such as when playing DVD movies or listening to music). We recommend springing for the $134 six-cell modular-bay battery, which should increase the T4220's endurance to about six hours, according to Fujitsu. Just keep in mind you'll need to pop out the DVD drive to use it.

Also part of the new Centrino platform is Intel's Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN, an integrated wireless solution that supports draft-n connectivity. The T4220 turned in very good scores of 18.3 and 14.1 Mbps at 15 and 50 feet, respectively, on our Wi-Fi throughput tests. The system comes with Windows Vista Business Edition, but you can order it with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition instead. Be sure to check back once we get a final-production model in.

Despite its underwhelming battery life, the Fujitsu LifeBook T4220 is a solid convertible that gets a sizable performance boost from Intel's newest Centrino processor and graphics technology.
